Lee Kirk - The Prints and The Paper

Page history last edited by PBworks 13 years, 4 months ago

Radio - warm summer evenings, everyone's window and doors open (no AC in our poor homes back then!) and the neighborhood ringing with Amos and Andy, the unmistakable "HowDEEE!" of Minnie Pearl, Molly shouting "Don't open that closet, McGee!", the Lone Ranger riding to the strains of the William Tell Overture - the most ominous thing being "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" and people gathering to listen to their favorite shows no matter where they might be at the moment. Pancake suppers - canasta or other social games - sitting on the porch sharing iced teas and conversation murmuring into the shadows and darkness descending...sharing their thoughts, their lives. Better than therapy. We were poor, but we didn't realize how rich we were.

Radio engaged the imagination actively. I can remember so many of those programs so clearly - I can't remember what was on TV last season, if I even bothered to watch it at all.
